Professor Chase knows a ton of stuff, but he's not a particularly fabulous teacher. I was in his junior seminar, and he spent way too much time lecturing and not nearly enough discussing. I can't imagine how much lecture he gives in non-seminar classes! His lectures are also very rambling and get off-topic quickly, and he covers the same material three or four times over the course of a couple lectures. He also gets behind on the reading but then doesn't make it clear what students are supposed to read for the next class. Even when he is explicit about what to do, often he won't cover the readings that he assigned. He also gave two papers in what was supposed to fulfill the junior writing requirement, making for very little feedback on his writing. If you want to learn a lot, especially about the Middle East, and don't mind all of his disorganization, rambling, and lack of feedback, take his classes.
